The working principle of the mechanical structure of the ordinary four - arm caliper. The four arms of the caliper open and close to the borehole wall at the end under the action of a spring. Therefore, the opening and closing of the four arms reflect the change in well diameter. The distance between the ends of the two arms reflects the diameter of the well.

When the well diameter changes and the arms of the caliper open and close, it will drive the connecting rod 4 up and down. If the link is connected to a sliding arm with variable resistance, the change in diameter can be converted into a change in resistance.
